Picks up again during the military parts, best part of the game aside from the helicopter part. But once you hit those underground areas, it sucks. That's when the quality nosedives for me. The game would be quite short if it was all as good as everything before the Vigoor church. I suspect it was padding the game length. I know, they also send you through sewers and stuff, but that always feels like a detour rather than most of the level. Level design is tight there, I always feel like I'm progressing, like there's a point. I much prefer 2 and even 3 (.Well, Razors Edge, not that THING that the original NG3 was) for this reason. But it doesn't change my feelings of how I'm just wandering around locations for no reason other than it's where the game wants me to go. It's not even about being lost, I've played it enough to always know exactly where to go. The level design is just pointless meandering. I mean, at any given point, ask yourself why Ryu is where he is. It really does feel like most of the time you're just going through areas for the most stupid contrived reasons possible. City is locked, run around an ice and lava dungeon for an hour to find a teleporter to get you back in. A small metal fence blocks you in, time to enter the sewers and spend 2 hours in a pointless puzzle dungeon to get back to the city. Go to the underground path to the palace, except nothing is down there and you just do a giant loop around the caacombs for literally no reason and pop up right back out at the place you started at. The line from Gamov about Ryu "He's running around somewhere, who knows where he is" really sums it up. Most of your play time is running round no where important, with no story reason for why.
